Girls Varsity Basketball · Lady Titans Second Half of Season Off to A Great Start

The Lady Titans went into the halfway point of the season sitting pretty good BUT they did drop a few games that they shouldn’t have.

They dropped games to McKeesport (C), Elizabeth Forward (C). Southmoreland (C), Moon, Monessen, Mars and Westinghouse.

The Lady Titans are ultimately 2 wins away from clinching their first playoff birth since 2014 and the first under 2nd year head coach Bob Perry.

West Mifflin is led by juniors Shelby Genes and Lauren Yuhas. These two have put up double digit points in nearly every game this season. They have also been hit with adversity as well. Some calls going the wrong way, off days for some and now INJURIES. Avi Adams, she will be a 4 year letter-man and 3 year starter, looks like she will be out for the rest of the season with a lower body injury. Ashleigh Yuhas, also a senior, is down at the moment with a lower body injury, but they hope to have her back for Thursday’s game vs Ringgold, but really want her back for the game against Elizabeth Forward.

West Mifflin has 3 freshman that have stepped up big time this season. Shannon Conley has gotten multiple starts this year. She has played very well since coming up to play varsity. This is only her second full year playing basketball and she improves day by day. Addie Hilligsberg has also gotten some spot starts. She dropped 12 one time this year. Emily Beck has also played well in the minutes that she got. Her best game was last Monday vs Belle Vernon. She had 4 points both on rebounds and put backs. When WM dropped into a zone she played well down low.

The Titans have gotten better game by game. Most of the first half of the season they have averaged over 20 turnovers per game. They were also shooting less than 75% from the free throw line. In the last 3 they have cleaned that up.

Thursday night they will host the Ringgold Lady Rams in a conference match-up. They defeated the Rams on the road earlier this year.  Not by much but WM held off the Rams and Nya Adams to less than 10 points. If the Titans pull this one off, they will almost be guaranteed a four spot in the W.P.I.A.L. playoffs. It will not be a straight out 4 seed though. It will make it a tiebreak for the spot.

Monday (1/27) the Lady Titans travel to Elizabeth Forward in another very pivotal match-up that will have playoff implications.  If the Titans win Thursday and Monday they will be guaranteed a playoff spot.  In a the previous match-up, the Warriors knocked off West Mifflin in a 4 point win. The Lady Titans could not overcome the shooting of Haven Briggs. She came into the game in the 2nd and knocked out 4 total threes throughout the game. The Lady Titans go into EF knowing what is on the line and will come out ready to play.

Come out and support the lady titans as they push for the playoffs.
